Product Description

The B&W Zeppelin Air is a futurist-looking, modern-sounding, iPod docking station designed to fill a room with anything your iPod desires while making an aesthetic statement that will raise eyebrows. Most will look at it and wonder what the heck it is. It looks like a black, elongated, foam football, but at the same time, it looks like some modern electronic device yet to be defined. Place your iPod or iPhone on the docking station and it's purpose in life becomes immediately clear.

The heart of the B&W Zeppelin Air is a three-way speaker system with a wide dynamic range. This stereo playback system features one 1” aluminum tweeter and one 3” midrange per channel. Bass is reproduced through a single 5” subwoofer driver. Total frequency response is 51Hz to 36kHz. Keep in mind, the human ear cannot perceive frequencies higher than 20kHz, so the extended high frequency range is irrelevant.

The important thing worth noticing is the wide frequency range given the size of this system. The mid- and high-range drivers accept 25W each while the subwoofer accepts 50W, so the Zeppelin Air has the capacity to produce a respectable amount of volume.

Consumers in the market for such a device may compare it to the comparable Bose SoundDock 10. The Bose system has more body in the low frequencies, although it has a hollow overall acoustic presence compared to the B&W. The Bose has a single amplifier driving two 2-1/2” speakers. The B&W is bi-amped, meaning it has a dedicated amplifier driving the subwoofer and a separate amplifier driving the mid and high frequencies. This bi-amped design ensures clean power into each range of drivers. This is especially important when reproducing low frequencies and crisp, clear high frequencies. Each amplifier concentrates its efforts on reproducing a select bandwidth of frequencies rather than the entire frequency spectrum.

With all this positive talk about the quality of construction and electronics, it's important not to lose sight of the fact that this is not a $5,000 piece of equipment. As far as a B&W offering goes, it's modestly priced. Just understand, the Zeppelin Air does reproduce sound very well within its price range, but it does not sound like a top-end-of-the-line audiophile stereo system. As far as docking stations go, it's excellent for what it is. If you're looking for a high-quality docking station, look no further. You've found an excellent one and it looks fantastic!

Sleek and stylish with a quality sonic voice, the B&W Zeppelin Air will definitely spawn a conversation with anyone who lays eyes on it. It supports modern iPods and iPhones with an impressive frequency response and quality components. While the audio reproduction isn't on par with high-end stereo systems with a price tag of 5 figures or even 6 figures, it does offer crisp and clear mids and highs with clean, albeit modest, bass reproduction.
